Nokido

A local-first runtime for an artificial organism: the nervous system and physiology that let local models, cloud providers and coding agents work together on your machine, without becoming a heap of independent agents.

This is a static page. It is not connected to any running Nokido: no hub, no memory, no keys live here. Statuses below are copied from the repository's status table; walkthroughs are illustrations of the documented path, not recorded runs.

Explore the organism

Select an organ: its role, its declared status, and the evidence the repository cites for it.

Clients (disposable)

Coding agents
described in the README

Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Antigravity and other MCP clients call the hub. The client stays disposable; the system persists.

Evidence

MCP over HTTP

Hub and protocols

MCP hub
operational

One hub that clients reach through MCP; every action goes through it so it can be gated and journaled.

Evidence

NokidoMCP hub, enabled by default

M2M messaging
operational

Messages between agents carry an intent from a closed dictionary and a pointer to the source of truth.

Evidence

forge_m2m_protocol validator (intents, pointers)

ACP
in development

Agent interoperability protocol.

Evidence

NokidoAcpWs, disabled by default

A2A Tier-1
paused

Agent-to-agent protocol.

Evidence

NokidoA2A, disabled by default (code present)

Cognition

Model routing
described in the README

Routes across local and cloud models by use case, with a local fallback.

Memory and retrieval
described in the README

Long-term memory with provenance: full-text and vector retrieval over what the system learned.

Swarm
hardening

Several models deliberate on one question.

Evidence

forge_swarm family: NR in CI for 12 of 13 modules (not the base one)

Epistemic drive
first piece

Turns a detected knowledge gap into an inquiry.

Evidence

forge_epistemic_daemon; full cortex-autonomic coupling not built

Autonomous evolution
guarded

Changes to Nokido itself, behind a single gate.

Evidence

forge_mutation_judge: one gate (owner arming, brake, human lock) + auto-brake on capability regression

Physiology and defence

Governance gates
operational

Deterministic gates around actions: AST checks, secret scanning, RBAC, egress control.

Evidence

NokidoGateConsumer + forge_golden_rules_ast

Immune system
partial

Filters what leaves for the cloud and checks what comes back.

Evidence

forge_semantic_firewall + forge_sovereign_membrane

Endocrine
operational

Hormone-like signals that modulate the whole body.

Evidence

NokidoHormonesListener + forge_endocrine

Nervous system
operational

Afferent signals and organ pulses.

Evidence

NokidoAfferent + NokidoOrganPulse

Homeostasis
achieved

Regulates CPU, RAM, queues and providers under pressure.

Evidence

NokidoHomeostasis + forge_homeostasis_orchestrator

Circadian cycle
partial

Sleep-like phases for maintenance work.

Evidence

forge_circadian beats; 7 of 9 phase targets disabled or undeclared

Spiking substrate
experimental

Software spiking neural network, on demand.

Evidence

forge_snn_core + forge_snn_router

Follow a request

Illustration of the documented path. Not a recorded run.

Call

A coding agent calls a tool on the hub through MCP. It does not touch files or the shell directly.

Gate

The hub checks the action before it runs: role, AST validity, secret scanning, egress rules.

Route

Work that needs a model goes to a local model or, by use case, to a cloud provider, with a local fallback.

Protect

What leaves for the cloud passes the semantic firewall; what comes back is checked on the way in.

Remember

Results and decisions are anchored in memory with their provenance, retrievable later.

Regulate

If CPU, RAM or queues come under pressure, hormone-like signals and homeostasis slow down or shed work.

The self-improvement loop

How a change to Nokido itself is meant to travel, and where it stands today.

Observe

The body records what went wrong or could be better.

Hypothesis

A candidate change is proposed for one well-defined setting.

Isolated trial

The change is tried apart from the running organism.

Judge

Regression tests decide; a capability regression brakes the loop automatically.

Decide

One gate: the owner must arm evolution, a brake can halt it, a human lock can hold it.

Watch and revert

After a change, the body keeps measuring and must be able to prove a revert.

Status: guarded. The judge and the brakes exist; arming is an owner decision. As of 2026-10-13, no mutation has been applied autonomously.

Declared, observed, verified

DeclaredWhat the code or a config says. An organ can exist in code without being wired.
ObservedWhat a probe sees right now. A port that answers does not prove a model is loaded.
VerifiedWhat a test or an artifact proves. A probe that cannot look reports ILLISIBLE, never “no”.

What Nokido does not claim

Nokido is an alpha-stage research and engineering project. The repository, its tests and its live capability checks are the authoritative source for the current state.

Try it

pip install nokido-agent
nokido-doctor # what this machine has, lacks, or cannot read

The cloned repository remains the reference path for the full organism (services, supervisor, local models): see the installation section.
